During this time more than one million people took out rallies in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland to support women’s rights. It has since also focused on issues ranging from equality for women to violence against women in the workplace. However, no group owned the program. International Women’s Day was recognized by the United Nations in 1977. Since then the members of the United Nations started celebrating this day as International Women’s Day.
