A family in Colorado was attacked by a mountain lion while they were enjoying a hot tub outside their home. The attack happened on Saturday night in Chaffee County.
The man told us that he felt something grab onto his head while he was enjoying the hot tub.
The Colorado Parks and Wildlife says that the victim had four small scratches on top of his head and near his right ear.
CPW was notified when the victim showed up at the hospital with injuries. The officers determined that the injuries were consistent with those of a mountain lion.
The woman tried to scare away the big cat by spraying it with water. The couple somehow managed to escape to their home and call for help.
The victim’s wife and husband were screaming and splashing water at a mountain lion that they had seen in their hot tub. The mountain lion retreated about 20 feet from the couple in the hot tub because of the noise and light.
The couple continued to yell at the mountain lion, and eventually it moved up to a hill near some rocks where it crouched down and continued to watch them.
Regional wildlife manager Sean Shepherd said: “We think the mountain lion probably saw the human head move in the darkness at ground level, but didn’t recognize the people in the hot tub.”
The couple made noise and shone a light on the lion, which made the lion go away. The couple were only slightly injured, but we take this incident seriously. We have alerted neighbours and posted signs warning of lion activity. And we will continue to track the lion and lion activity.
Officials say that this is the first time a mountain lion has attacked a human this year. There have been 24 attacks in Colorado.
